a discovery playlist featuring my recent top 10 new music releases

ttpd: theres nothing i love more than talking about a new taylor swift album. this latest one was cathartic, so niche and personal and at time very funny, and unexpected in terms of content. although at times it felt she played it a little too safe or the lyrics felt clunky, this album really feels like an honest window into her world during a very difficult time in her life in a way i dont think we’ve gotten before.

thoughts on my top 3 songs from the album right now:

  1. the smallest man who ever lived: the references here go crazy, and the bridge?! even crazier. I think this may be her best bridge in ttpd. I think something so great about this album is it feels like these songs were written in the moment of some very deep emotion or tragic event. they aren’t reflections, but more timestamps of how she was feeling and i think this song feels like a great example of that. its dramatic and angry and honest.

  2. the black dog: upon first listen of the double album, this became my instant favorite. the opening lines depict a feeling anyone who has been through a breakup knows too well, i think it has some of the strongest lyrics on the album, and as a 1975 my jaw dropped when i heard her mention the starting line. plus the buildup to the last word in the chorus?! yeah this one is incredible.

  3. so long london: this song was everything i was hoping for and maybe the saddest one on the entire album. the third verse might have my favorite lyrics on the entire 31 song album, I love the play on words with “I loved this place for so long, london”.

“Everything that happens is from now on.” From Re: Stacks by Bon Iver. In context it’s about a breakup marking the end of an era but it also is true for every moment of anyone’s life ever.
