BOTW Shallow Alcove

Shallow Alcove, fronted by Grace Krichbaum and Dan Harris with Peter Groppe, Jack Harrington, and Noah Dardaris, weaves stacked vocal harmonies, catchy guitar riffs, and diary-like lyrics into a tender soundtrack for young adulthood. Rooted in DIY folk and narratives of friendship, seasons, and growing pains, their music bridges the intimacy of Upstate New York beginnings with the energy of New York City and Philadelphia.

What does life look like for you right now?

#tour

Ins and outs for this month? 👑📅🫶

Ins: meeting your heroes, journaling, purple pants, sticking your head out the window of the car, calling your sister

Outs: overcooked eggs, thought spirals, judging a book by its cover, AI reels

What’s your favorite hobby right now? What’s a hobby you want to get into this year?🛹🧘‍♀️📷

I’m really into journaling right now. I’ve been chronicling each of my days in detail this month on tour and I’ve really enjoyed knowing that I can look back on these moments when I’m older. I would LOVE to get into sewing this year; I know that every single year that I do not learn how to make my own clothes is a massive portion of my artistic potential wasted, but alas, I am lazy and hate being bad at things at the start. Hopefully 2025 is my year!

Fashion pieces you’re interested in lately? 👜👡🧥

I’m very into anything that is made of tulle right now. Anything that resembles a giant tutu, really.

Piece of media that’s influenced you 🎼🖼️🎬

Scott Street by Phoebe Bridgers cosmically altered the course of my life and our music. When I heard it, I felt permission to be sad. Ultimately, that record was the reason I started writing songs that felt honest to me. Before then, I think I was subconsciously censoring myself. That record showed me that you can put literally anything in a song and it can be relatable to someone out there if it is honest to you.

What's your favorite winter activity? Winter snack/treat?

My favorite winter activity is putting on the giant rainbow scarf that I crocheted and ear muffs and mittens and a fuzzy winter coat and waddling around the city like a marshmallow. My partner and I really look forward to the Christmas Village in Philadelphia every year. Favorite winter treat is soup, I wish I could have soup for every meal. Bonus points if it’s pho!

Describe your recent work with a color/mood/season

Nostalgia folk made to be listened to as you’re driving past the house you grew up in but can no longer go inside.

Is there an artist you’ve seen live that blew you away?

MUNA feels like what I imagine church would feel like to a devoutly religious person, I left Phoebe Bridgers feeling like I was 5 years old and I had just been to Disney World for the first time (the only occasion I’ve been able to access this feeling in my adult life), and Vulva Voce (an all female string quartet that makes radical feeling music unlike anything else)

What are you listening to right now?

Current favorite song is The Pebble and the Man by Bridget St John. We’ve also been listening to a lot of The Staves, live at their shows because we are currently on tour with them, and in secret because we are massive fans.

What song/lyric are you most proud of?

Our song Mangos. My favorite lyrics from that song are in the last stanza:

“When I was a kid I hated mangos,

now I sit on an Italian park bench

Wondering where did all the time go, sticky mango juice dripping down my chin

And in that moment I realized

How much I have the capacity to change

Tears went streaming down my face case

Maybe I don’t have to die this way”

I love this song because these lyrics were written in the depths of a really tough time for me mentally. I was struggling with OCD and emetophobia on the road, and when it got almost debilitatingly bad, I was certain that I would feel that way forever. This last verse reminds me that change isn’t only possible, change is imminent. Change just is. Nothing can stay the same forever, and that can be a gift.

What’s a lyric you think about often?

“Saw a butterfly, named it after you” from “I Must Be in a Good Place Now” by Bobby Charles, or “Everything eats and is eaten, time is fed” from Ingydar By Adrianne Lenker. Those lyrics are so starkly different I’m loling

What’s your dream collab?

The whole band are die hard fans of a band called “The Roches”. Since we’re dreaming, if we could somehow go back in time and sing with them in 1980, that would be our collective wish.

Top 4 favorite films?

The Shining, Bridges of Madison County, Shiva Baby, Little Women.
