Dear Besties šŸ’Œ Lucy Dacus Inspired Jewelry, JBrekkie Album Giving Us Life, Sing Karaoke with Lana?? + More!

a discovery playlist featuring weekly top 10 music releases

  1. Japanese Breakfast- Winter in LA: One of my favorites from For Melancholy Brunettes (& sad women), this song just feels so effortless. Michelleā€™s vocals are soft and airy, and the production makes it feel like the perfect soundtrack for a long drive. Itā€™s warm, nostalgic, and hits that sweet spot between happy and sad.

  2. Jensen McRae- Savannah: Jensenā€™s songwriting is unreal, and Savannah is proof. I haven't found a song that strikes me right in the heart like this one does in ages.

  3. Susannah Joffe- Shit out of Luck: This song is pure catharsis. Itā€™s twangy, punchy, and has the perfect amount of attitudeā€”like screaming in your car after a situation that absolutely did not go your way. Susannah keeps proving sheā€™s one to watch, and this track is further proof that country-pop heartbreak anthems will always hit.

Whatā€™s your favorite hobby right now? Whatā€™s a hobby you want to get into this year? šŸ›¹šŸ§˜ā€ā™€ļøšŸ“·

Iā€™ve been really enjoying cooking - I have been picking 3 new recipes from NYT to cook each week and it feels relaxing to wind down by making something for myself or to share with others. Food is a huge part of my relationship with myself, my girlfriend, and my friends, so being more involved with it is very rewarding except for when it tastes like shit, but right now Iā€™m working with a 75% success rate. I need to learn how to knit so mf bad but I swear to god it is hopeless, but maybe the stars will align and Iā€™ll become a knitting legend overnight.

Piece of media thatā€™s influenced you šŸŽ¼šŸ–¼ļøšŸŽ¬

ā€œMarie Antoinetteā€ by Sofia Coppola and ā€œThelma and Louiseā€ by Ridley Scott. Both made huge impressions on me as a kid and if I had to sum up my two most recent singles, it would be with those films: pastel, gay, horny whimsy.

Any interesting/silly/fun recent tour anecdotes? šŸŽ†šŸ¤ŖšŸ™ˆ

The last tour I did through Texas, this fan that has come to all my Texas shows handed me a bouquet and also showed me a tattoo she got that I drew for her, which was surreal. I am also beyond excited to be going on tour with Alix Page this Spring, and I anticipate an anecdote from that tour will be ā€œOMG I blew up on this tour and am a superstar now!ā€

Describe your recent work by a color/season/mood/something interesting šŸ‚šŸŒØļøšŸŒ¼

If you could have any superpower, what would it be and why? šŸ¦øā€ā™€ļøāš”ļøšŸ•øļø

Oh teleportation without a doubt. I spend probably so much of my life in transit. On a good day itā€™s sitting on cross-country trains from London to Inverness. On a bad day itā€™s being de-boarded at some station in the middle of England because thereā€™s a fault in the line, or hour-long passport control queues in Luton airport. Also, I donā€™t get to see my gran enough. The ability to zip and zap back to Inverness would be great.

Is there an artist youā€™ve seen live that blew you away? šŸŖ•šŸŽ«šŸŽ¤

Not to be that bitch butā€¦. Mk.geeā€™s live show was a spiritual experience. It was all I thought about it for the months following, he is ethereal.

What are you listening to right now? šŸŽ§šŸ“»šŸ’æ

ā€œLove is like a butterflyā€ by Dolly Parton is stuck in my head all the time, along with ā€œAll That Jazzā€ from Chicago. Yes, the rumors are true, I was both a choir and theatre kid.

What fashion pieces have you been into lately? šŸ‘—šŸŽ€šŸ§¢

Iā€™ve been on a crazy burlesque rabbit hole lately, along with anything leopard print or cone bras. In another life I knew how to sew and was posting up in full costume every day but that is another thing that sadly was not meant to be. Iā€™m also in desperate need of a new pair of cowboy boots because my gold ones are on their last leg.

Favorite sad song ever? šŸ˜šŸŽ»šŸ‘©ā€šŸŽ¤

This is a toughieā€¦right now I really love ā€œSnake Eyesā€ by Sadurn. I think my favorite sad song ever may be ā€œGoodbye Virginia,ā€ which is a song my Dad wrote about having to leave Virginia when I was a baby. I hate change and am a sentimental girl, so it really hurts in the best way. We put it out under a father-daughter project called ā€œYour Daughterā€™s Father,ā€ and I highly recommend it if youā€™re a fan of sad indie folk.

What song/lyric are you most proud of? šŸ““šŸŖžšŸ’Œ

I am proud of the line ā€œI will die your daughterā€ because of how much that singular line has impacted people in my community. But the song I am most proud of has to be ā€œShit Out of Luckā€ because of how simultaneously different it is from all my music and authentic/unique it feels to me. It draws its fiery spirit from the vengeful, queer-coded western classic ā€œThelma & Louise.ā€ Me and my producer really played around with this song, like we used a lot of kitschy, southern-fried sound bites: a horseā€™s neigh, the crack of a whip, the thunder of a rifle. But underneath all that, it is a super honest song about a heartbreak that cuts to the bone. One of my favorite lyrics is: ā€œyou taught my hands how to hold, talked of grocery lists and growing old.ā€

Whatā€™s a lyric you think about often? šŸ“ƒšŸ¹šŸ’

ā€œI found blood and I saw stars all in the backseat of your car.ā€ God I think about that line all the time, itā€™s from ā€œIndie Rokkersā€ by MGMT. It just gives me chills in the both the best and worst way.

Whatā€™s your dream collab? šŸ«‚šŸ”®šŸ«§

So many answers: Iā€™d love to collab with Role Model in some way, whether that be a tour or a song. Same goes for The Chicks, who I grew up listening to, Suki Waterhouse, Clairo, Lana del Rey, Stephen Sanchez, and Chappell Roan.

Top 4 favorite films? šŸŽžļøāļøšŸŽ„

Catching Fire (Iā€™m a closeted YA/fantasy esque nerd, yes Iā€™ve read ACOTAR and I loved it) The Proposal, Black Swan, & Blue is the Warmest Color (which I watched hours before coming out to my family when I was 19).

Favorite TV show right now and favorite TV show ever? šŸ“ŗšŸŽ™ļøšŸŽ

My favorite TV show right now is Yellowjackets and I think my favorite TV show ever would either be New Girl or Glee.
